How can lower piston mass be translated into a better machine? The answer to this question depends very much on the exact type of machine and the application. Here are some of the ways that seem to cover the improvements that are typically experienced by our customers. Initial reductions are primarily sought for the larger low pressure pistons – where the leverage is highest – but are by no means limited to these.
Vibration reduction
There is an obvious relation between the vibration level and mass, especially for single throw, vertical/parallel, V, W and L-type configurations. But also opposed types may benefit in this respect, especially in applications such as in offshore platforms where vibration transmitted to the foundation itself is critical.
Speed increase
There are applications where the machine productivity benefits from a higher rpm. The design point may be shifted upwards when piston mass can be lowered. Such potential improvements can be realised if the design is fully adapted to the higher speed following the current trend in machine speed increase.
Efficiency increase
At any given speed, the energy loss associated with reciprocating mass can be lowered. Such energy loss is often not easily quantified but is apparent from the energy required for running unloaded and this is associated with non-rigid behaviour. Part of this loss is easier understood, because it is proportional to frictional forces, mainly in horizontal machines. Such rider band losses are also substantially reduced due to mass reduction.
Elimination of (piston) fatigue problems
