How could a light weight piston benefit your compressor design?
A Quick Scan is an easy way to check if your application can benefit from weight reduction. In a few days we already know more, in a few weeks we know for certain.
Are you curious about the weight reduction that can be achieved by applying a revolutionary light weight piston concept? Whether your piston type, temperature and other
requirements can be met? Whether hybrid materials will last and whether they are robust? How well proven the technology really is?
There is an abundance of valid questions like this. 30% Mass reduction would be good – or better even 60%? But what will that cost to develop and manufacture? A larger bore piston for the same weight? Or rather an increase of compressor speed? Panacea believes that the appreciation of the benefits of a lightweight piston is best obtained in mutual discussion between you – the compressor manufacturer – and Panacea. Hence the Panacea Quick Scan.
We have found the Quick Scan activities valuable in the initial communication with our potential customers. It could provide you with the following:
• Insight in the achievable range of mass reduction relative to your
current technology or products;
• An appreciation of the cost-benefit relation considering the
various technology options;
• An opportunity to explore the various ways to materialize the
benefits of mass reduction, e.g. increase of capacity by speed
increase versus bore enlargement.
• Answers to your possible concerns about the new technology,
e.g. reliability or high temperature performance.
The procedure is as follows:
• First we initiate a dialogue where an inventory is made of your considerations, wishes and requirements. An agreement is made concerning confidentiality. A presentation can be given on your site as required.
• In a subsequent step, an analysis is made of your current products and this is translated into preliminary hybrid designs. This could apply to a single design or to a family of products.
• Having established a global design and possibly a trade-off between mass reduction and complexity (cost), a report will be prepared and presented.
The factors we typically will address, include:
• Integration of specific piston rod coupling;
• Rider ring size and number and its possible reduction due to weight reduction;
• Piston gas and inertial loading;
• Anticipated piston temperature, special environmental requirements and materials selection;
• The desired (fatigue) life and the design philosophy;
• The annual production numbers;
The final result of the Panacea Quick Scan is a dedicated report containing conclusions and recommendations based on your requirements and our analysis. This will be helpful in assessing the merits of the light weight piston technology, the risks involved and the time required for implementation.
